Academic Advisor Job Description

An academic advisor is a faculty or staff member that offers support to students such as suggesting majors or courses, acting as an advocate for students, and advising students on academic goals and career development.

Academic advisors often work individually with students but may also serve on a team, such as an academic advising center.

Often, advisors serve as members of a student’s faculty advisory committee.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for an Academic Advisor who can help us choose the right classes, make a degree plan, and understand university policies.

Academic Advisor Duties:

• Advise students on academic matters, including academic standing, graduation requirements, and graduation requirements
• Provide academic counseling
• Provide career counseling
• Work with faculty in the department to assist in the development of academic programming
• Provide support and assistance in all of the student services offices
• Evaluate students’ progress toward graduation
• Provide information and counseling on academic problems

Academic Advisor Responsibilities:

• Train, guide, and advise students on academic planning, including curriculum, graduation requirements, and career opportunities
• Attend, lead, and participate in campus and department activities, including college, department, and student organization meetings
• Provide students with information and support on academic issues and campus resources, including career, educational, and financial aid information
• Assist students with identifying and pursuing personal, educational, and career goals
• Conduct career assessments, perform career counseling, and refer students to resources as appropriate

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in counseling or related field
• 3+ years of proven experience in advising college/university students
• Knowledge of college/university admissions requirements
• Ability to understand and communicate to students and their parents about financial aid options
• Ability to counsel students with personal, career and academic issues
