A bereavement counselor is a type of professional who specializes in helping people who are grieving.

Bereavement counselors work with clients either one-on-one or in a group setting.

Some bereavement counselors have training in grief counseling and bereavement management, while others demonstrate expertise working with people who have experienced loss.

We’re looking for a Bereavement Counselor to help support people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This person will provide counseling and guidance to help people through the grieving process.

Bereavement Counselor Duties

• Provide counseling to bereaved individuals
• Develop and implement bereavement programs
• Promote a nurturing environment
• Meet with bereaved individuals, providing support and information
• Develop relationships with community agencies
• Develop community bereavement programs
• Develop and coordinate community grief support programs
• Provide consultation and training to organizations or individuals
• Advise funeral directors and organizations on funeral policies and practices
• Provide bereavement services to staff

Bereavement Counselor Responsibilities

• Assist clients in coping with the emotional and spiritual aspects of loss, identifying coping strategies and meeting individual goals
• Develop and implement individual client plans, and provide feedback to the case manager
• Develop and maintain productive working relationships with clients, other professionals, and the public
• Attend and participate in staff meetings, program training, and continuing education activities
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills

• Master’s degree in social work, mental health counseling, or a related field
• 2+ years experience in pastoral or bereavement counseling
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of people
• Ability to communicate well and effectively with others
• Strong knowledge of suicide and grief issues, and excellent counseling
