Chief Medical Officer Job Description

The chief medical officer (CMO) is responsible for planning and supervising all medical affairs at a large organization, such as a hospital.

A large hospital, for example, may have a medical director, chief nursing officer, chief operating officer, and chief information officer.

The CMO coordinates each of these positions, which frequently work together on a team.

The CMO may also act as the medical director, or may be responsible for medical affairs at more than one hospital.

Chief Medical Officer Duties:

• Provide medical expertise to the organization, support strategic initiatives, oversee process improvement, and implement new technologies
• Establish and maintain relationships with healthcare stakeholders
• Provide comprehensive quality management ensuring regulatory compliance and quality standards are maintained
• Lead staff to perform daily tasks, including pre-authorizations, and certification and authorization processes
• Conduct research, develop plans, and make recommendations that lead to process improvement
• Identify opportunities for cost savings and quality improvements
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
• Oversee the organization’s risk management program
• Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory entities such as CMS, HIPAA, FCC, and OIG
• Conduct regular audits of medical records to ensure regulatory compliance
• Ensure that the organization’s medical policies and protocols meet state and federal laws and regulations
• Develop and maintain policies and procedures for safe patient care that comply with state and federal laws and regulations

Chief Medical Officer Responsibilities:

• Highly developed medical knowledge of general medical conditions, diseases, and treatment
• Ability to re-assess the clinical and diagnostic values of clinical data, information, test results, and data; knowledge of medical terminology, medical abbreviations, medical billing, medical coding, medical ethics, and universal precautions
• Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of medical complications; knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations; knowledge of HIPAA standards
• Knowledge of safety and infection control standards and procedures; ability to interpret medical charts and reports; ability to obtain accurate information from patients to complete diagnostic and treatment reports
• Ability to collect and analyze epidemiological data; ability to develop and maintain relationships with physicians and other health care professionals; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in medicine or surgery, and 2+ years of medical management experience
• Expertise and knowledge in managed care, medical billing, coding, and procedures
• Expertise in medical specialty areas, especially oncology and internal medicine
• Knowledge of administrative matters
