Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Job Description

The CTO is the executive in charge of a company’s technology department.

The CTO delegates tasks to staff engineers, develops technology policies, and manages the company’s IT budget.

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Duties:

• Maintain oversight of all technology-related aspects of the company to ensure optimal operations
• Ensure that all technology-related aspects of the company are aligned with current and future business strategies
• Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and practices to ensure optimal operations
• Identify, review, and develop responses to technology-related risks, issues, and opportunities
• Establish measures to mitigate identified risks, issues, and opportunities
• Identify, develop, and implement technological solutions to issues or opportunities
• Manage and develop relationships with outside technology vendors
• Manage IT budget
• Eliminate redundancies in technology systems
• Maintain compliance with all laws, regulations, and policies
• Always be at the forefront of technology

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Responsibilities:

• Develop and provide technical direction related to product and technology development, including product and technology development roadmaps, application architecture, and resource allocation
• Lead technology and operational teams during development and implementation phases, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, and documentation
• Manage information technology projects, including vendor relationships, budgets and schedules, quality management, and risk management
• Develop and maintain software code and document changes, specifications, and analyses
• Develop technical strategies and business cases, and study the market and business trends to make tech investments
• Research and write policy, procedures, and standards, and oversee the implementation and enforcement of IT policies, procedures, and standards
• Implement and manage data storage and backup, computer security, and firewall and router configuration
• Managing business development activities, including sales, marketing, and public relations
• Develop and maintain vendor relationships

Requirements And Skills:

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
• 6+ years’ experience in a technology leadership role
• Expertise in technology strategy, planning, implementation, and business operations
• Solid understanding of emerging technologies, market trends, and their impact on business
