Math Teacher Job Description

A math teacher is a teacher of mathematics.

Math teachers are not necessarily required to have completed a math degree, although most do.

Math teachers must be registered with their local school board and pass a credentials test.

Math Teacher Duties:

• Be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the instruction in all areas of math to a diverse group of students
• Conduct assessments of student progress toward mastery of each learning objective by administering, scoring, and reporting on standardized tests, interim assessments, and projects
• Evaluate student performance using objective data
• Develop lesson plans that provide students with the opportunity to learn math content
• Assist students with special needs
• Coordinate with other teachers in classrooms to ensure a smooth transition
• Provide students with the appropriate level of math instruction
• Provide ongoing formative assessments to determine student progress
• Collaborate with parents, teachers, and administrators to address student performance
• Track student progress to ensure each student is reaching his or her potential

Math Teacher Responsibilities:

• Provide instruction in all aspects of math, including algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics
• Correct all student work and provide one-on-one tutoring
• Prepare and conduct unit tests, quizzes, and educational games
• Provide curriculum, materials, and instructional resources
• Evaluate student progress
• Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons
• Provide feedback on student performance
• Prepare and administer teacher evaluations
• Coordinate with other teachers, school staff, and parents to collaborate for student success
• Attend staff meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other school events
• Assess student learning needs and develop effective lesson plans
• Work with administrators to improve school curriculum and educational programs
• Determine and implement new teaching strategies
• Meet with administrators to discuss educational resources, enrollment, and annual goals
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

• Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or related field
• 3+ years’ teaching experience
• Knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and economics
• Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally
• Independent learner with strong work ethic
• Ability to meet high professional standards
