Ocularist Job Description

An ocularist is a physician who specializes in disorders of the visual system.

An ocularist is trained to examine the human eye, diagnose its diseases, and treat disorders of the eyes.

An ocularist is a physician who has completed at least six years of college and four or more years of medical school to study ophthalmology.

When an ocularist completes residency, he or she becomes an ophthalmologist.

An ocularist may use procedures such as surgery to treat conditions like cataracts and glaucoma.

They may also prescribe and administer medications, such as eye drops, to treat ocular disorders.

Ocularist Duties:

• Develop and implement efficient patient eye examination procedures, protocols, and protocols.
• Assist physicians in diagnosis of ocular conditions, taking detailed patient histories and conducting diagnostic tests.
• Procure surgical supplies and equipment.
• Position patients during and following surgery.
• Provide post-operative care.
• Provide administrative and technical support.
• Report findings to physician and other medical staff.
• Provide exceptional customer service to patients, physicians, and staff members.

Ocularist Responsibilities:

• Operate the Optos Retinal Imaging System (ORIS) and the Cirrus OCT-2000, and perform comprehensive eye exams, including identifying visual acuity, examining the patient’s ocular health, evaluating ocular pathology, and prescribing appropriate glasses, contact lenses, and medications.
• Diagnose retinal disease, including macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, and refer patients to ophthalmologists and other specialists.
• Perform visual field testing, retinal photography, and fluorescein angiography.
• Establish and maintain professional relationships in the community.
• Develop and implement office policies, procedures, and standards.
• Effectively manage office and staff resources.
• Develop and implement office policies and procedures.
• Train new employees.

Requirements And Skills:

• ASCP certification desirable.
• Knowledge and experience with corneal, scleral, and laser refractive procedures.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and ophthalmic anatomy and physiology.
• Proficient use of instrumentation, supplies and equipment.
• Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationship.
