Patternmaker Job Description

A patternmaker is a worker who creates patterns for objects, such as paper, cloth, plastic, or wood.

When a patternmaker designs a pattern, they are working off some sort of template or model.

They always work off “the other side” of the template, or the reverse of the actual object that the pattern is being made for.

They measure and mark out a template, cutting away the excess material to create the final shape.

Patternmakers use specialized rulers, templates, and templates with a variety of edges, such as pointed, straight, or curved.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Patternmaker to help us create new patterns for our clothing line. The ideal candidate will have experience in fashion design and patternmaking, and will be able to create both digital and physical patterns. Patternmaker Duties:

• Design patterns and test them to ensure product quality
• Develop standardized production procedures
• Generate patterns based on customer specifications
• Create and edit drawings that are used to manufacture products
• Propose modifications to the types of materials used in product design
• Create and design new products
• Analyze the results of production tests and work with product development teams, suppliers, and other contractors to find solutions to problems
• Operate CAD software and other software used to create and edit products
• Maintain clear and up to date records
• Promote positive working relationships with suppliers and customers
• Attend meetings, conferences, and trade shows to stay current with trends and developments in manufacturing
• Develop and implement maintenance procedures
• Implement lean manufacturing and continuous process improvement
• Support new product designs
• Develop resume templates
• Update resumes
• Create new products

Patternmaker Responsibilities:

• Design and create patterns for the production and assembly of finished products
• Maintain and update CAD drawings of patterns, and translate them into CNC programs
• Create CAD prototypes of tools or parts, and work with engineers to refine designs
• Work with machinists and other designers to create manufacturing drawings
• Train less experienced patternmakers in all aspects of patternmaking
• Research and solve production problems

Requirements And Skills:

• Strong knowledge of sheet metal and metal fabrication
• Experience creating pattern layouts
• Ability to use a variety of production methods to fabricate pieces
• Experience fabricating products with composite material
• Knowledge of welding processes
• Ability to cut metal pieces to specifications
• Strong customer service skills
