Job Brief:
We’re looking for a Public Defender to join our team. As a Public Defender, you will be responsible for representing indigent clients in criminal proceedings. You will work closely with clients to ensure that their constitutional rights are protected and that they receive a fair trial. Public Defender Duties:
- Providing legal advice to clients and presenting cases in court
- Assisting law enforcement agencies with law enforcement activities
- Advocating on behalf of clients, including developing strategies
- Investigating facts, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses
- Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, law enforcement, and courts
- Performing other duties as assigned
Public Defender Responsibilities:
- Work with clients and their families to respond to and resolve legal problems, including preparing court documents, making court appearances, and negotiating settlements
- Obtain a complete understanding of client problems, including family dynamics, social, legal, and environmental factors
- Visit clients in prison and jails, preparing and managing client files, as well as interviewing clients and witnesses
- Work with attorneys and law enforcement personnel throughout the criminal justice process
- Develop and maintain relationships with professionals, community leaders, and other stakeholders
- Advise clients about social service agencies, legal processes, legal rights, and available assistance
- Meet with judges, prosecutors, and other court personnel as needed
- Attend and participate in community meetings
- Lead and participate in committees and organizations that provide pro bono legal assistance
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements And Skills:
- 3+ years experience as a public defender
- Demonstrated understanding of criminal justice system
- Familiar with the New Jersey court system including all laws and regulations
- Familiar with criminal procedure and law
- Familiar with rules of evidence
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal court
