A recreation specialist is a recreation professional, or a person who works mainly in the parks and recreation field.

A recreation specialist is generally educated and trained to conduct recreational activities, plan, and manage recreation activities, and assist in program development and implementation.

Recreation specialists provide leadership, guidance, and serving assistance to other persons who participate in recreation programs.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Recreation Specialist who can help us organize and plan recreation activities for our community center. The ideal candidate will have experience working with a variety of age groups and be able to create fun and engaging activities that meet the needs of our community. Recreation Specialist Duties:

  • Develop and implement leisure activities and programming for youth, adults, and seniors
  • Plan and implement activities by budgeting for supplies and staff
  • Maintain staffing schedules, compensation, and training
  • Create and maintain relationships with community leaders, potential sponsors, and clients
  • Establish and implement the recreation department’s strategic plan
  • Develop the department’s operating budget
  • Meet, contact, and consult with community, potential sponsors, and clients
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the recreation department’s continuing education program
  • Prepare reports, make presentations, and work on committees
  • Other duties as assigned

Recreation Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Preparing, coordinating, and supervising activities for the residents, including organizing group and individual activities, including arts and crafts, movies, games, trivia, and field trips
  • Developing and maintaining positive, trusting relationships with residents and their family members, and instilling a sense of belonging
  • Facilitating activities in accordance with residents’ needs and interests
  • Providing transportation to activities as needed
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment, and following all safety policies, procedures, and standards
  • Preventing accidents and injuries by following company procedures during activities, and responding promptly and appropriately to emergency situations
  • Complying with all Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances
  • Creating and maintaining appropriate documentation, including daily activity logs, incident reports, resident profiles, and resident files
  • Ensure residents’ rights are protected

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in recreation, education, or a related field
  • 2+ years’ of experience leading recreation programs
  • Strong management, organization, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to motivate and lead people
  • Familiar with a variety of recreation programs, techniques
