Victim Advocate Job Description

A victim advocate, also known as a victim counselor or victim/witness coordinator, is an advocate for those who have suffered a crime or crime-related event.

According to a 2014 report by the National District Attorneys Association, a victim advocate’s role is to assist victims with the criminal justice system and help them in the recovery of losses, both financial and emotional.

Victim advocates are employed by law enforcement agencies, victim/witness service providers, government agencies, corporations, hospitals, and universities.

Victim advocates typically assist with the recovery process by helping victims obtain restitution, filing insurance claims, arranging for transportation, and coordinating with healthcare providers.

Job Brief:

The Victim Advocate will work closely with our team of attorneys and investigators to ensure that our clients receive the best possible representation. Victim Advocate Duties:

• Assist victims with filing police reports, filing claims for insurance purposes, and testifying in court
• Resource for law enforcement on victim issues including domestic violence, sexual assault, and child crimes
• Provide community outreach and education services (such as workshops, seminars, and private sessions)
• Complete administrative tasks for organization, including archiving and filing, phone logs, and filing insurance claims
• Perform other duties as assigned

Victim Advocate Responsibilities:

• Attend to victim’s immediate concerns and provide crisis intervention
• Assist with victim’s resource and referral needs
• Attend to victim’s medical, social, and home safety issues
• Coordinate with law enforcement and court systems to address victim’s concerns
• Set up meetings with victim’s defense attorney, victim assistance services case manager, victim compensation coordinator, and victim’s employer, if applicable
• Monitor and follow up on case progress

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, or related field; Master’s Preferred.
• 3+ years’ proven experience in victim services
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including strong service orientation
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
