Youth Support Worker Job Description

A youth support worker works with youth in vulnerable situations, helping them transition into life after high school.

Youth Support Worker Duties:

• Assist youth in learning cognitive, physical, social, and emotional skills, as well as behavioral strategies to cope with adversity and challenges
• Manage behavior problems through structured behavior modification and behavior redirection
• Arrange for medical treatments when needed
• Coordinate with youth’s school, teachers, and counselors
• Attend meetings with parents or guardians
• Provide guidance and counseling for family issues
• Assist youth in staying on a positive path
• Continue to build upon positive relationships that have been established

Youth Support Worker Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain relationships with youth and families, providing support and counseling as needed to meet individual goals
• Maintain a safe and positive work environment at all times, and serve as a role model for program participants
• Provide supervision, assistance, accountability, and support to youth in completing assigned tasks and activities
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff and community partners
• Maintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and a positive and professional attitude

Requirements And Skills:

• General knowledge of mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse
• Ability to make sound judgments and decisions under high stress situations
• Ability to identify potential emotional/behavioral problems in youth
• Ability to listen and communicate effectively, both verbally and non-verbally
