What is Nepotism?
Nepotism is the practice of preferential treatment for close relatives in the workplace.
Nepotism in the workplace is viewed negatively by organizations with ethics standards. Employees that engage in nepotism are instead seen as selfish, deceitful, and disloyal.
If you are an employee who believes your manager may be guilty of nepotism, it can be difficult to know what to do. You may feel that the manager’s decisions are unfair, but you may not be sure if they count as nepotism. If you have concerns, it is a good idea to speak to your HR representative.
Nepotism in the workplace is avoided by most organizations with ethical codes.
Organizations with ethical codes typically forbid the hiring of relatives and prohibit employees from hiring relatives.
Employees who engage in nepotism are eventually terminated.
Nepotism is often thought of as a negative word, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, nepotism can be a positive force in the world. Here are three reasons why nepotism is necessary:
1. Nepotism can help create strong family bonds.
when family members are in positions of power, they often feel a need to help their loved ones succeed. This can create strong bonds between family members and help them to stick together through thick and thin.
2. Nepotism can encourage people to work harder.
when people know that they have a leg up because of their family connections, they often work harder to prove themselves.
