Last update : July 12, 2023

What is Social Security Number?

An SSN, also known as the Social Security number, is a nine-digit number issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Individuals are required to have an SSN in order to qualify for a number of benefits, including unemployment compensation, food assistance, public housing, Medicaid, and Medicare.

Why are Social Security Numbers Necessary?

As our lives increasingly move online, it’s important to protect our personal information. One way to do this is to keep our Social Security Numbers (SSNs) private. While it may be tempting to share this information with businesses or online services, it’s important to remember that our SSNs can be used to steal our identity. By keeping our SSNs to ourselves, we can help protect ourselves from identity theft and other fraud.
