What is Ageism?

Ageism is prejudice or discrimination based on age or perceived age.

Ageism refers to discrimination against individuals because of their age. Ageism can be perceived as being negative to a younger individual, but it can also have a negative impact on older individuals.

Ageism is a pervasive problem, affecting people of all races, genders, and ethnicities. Ageism affects people of all ages, but it often starts during childhood and adolescence and continues throughout a person’s life.

Ageism affects how older people are treated and how younger people view older people. Ageism in early childhood can affect a child’s confidence and self-esteem. As people age, ageism can affect a person’s ability to find work and make ends meet, to access healthcare, and to enjoy retirement.

Ageism is necessary because it helps to ensure that people are treated fairly and not discriminated against based on their age. Ageism also helps to protect people from being taken advantage of or exploited because of their age.
