Astronomer Job Description

An astronomer studies celestial bodies, including the sun, the moon, the stars, and planets.

An astronomer’s job is to collect data about astronomical objects.

Astronomers may observe the sky from Earth through telescopes, or they may travel to space (especially a spacecraft), and observe the sky from space.

An astronomer’s work involves observing and documenting celestial objects throughout almost every type of weather.

Astronomers study objects through many different types of equipment, including cameras and spectrometers.

They use both physical instruments and computer software to analyze the data they collect.

Astronomers use computer models to describe and predict celestial objects and their behavior.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for an astronomer to help us study the stars.

Astronomer Duties:

• Develop and implement programs to excite the curiosity of school children and the general public about astronomy
• Encourage participation in research
• Develop educational materials, supervise staff, and coordinate activities
• Make presentations to community groups, school districts, and other interested groups
• Develop and maintain contacts with administrators and staff of local, state, and federal government agencies
• Develop and maintain contacts with planetariums and planetarium directors
• Develop and maintain contacts with other organizations involved in astronomy education
• Develop and maintain contacts with professional astronomical organizations
• Develop and maintain contacts with relevant individuals

Astronomer Responsibilities:

• Perform basic observational and instrument calibration, maintenance, and repair tasks as needed, including the use of hydrogen maser, infrared spectrometer, and near-infrared spectrograph, and telescope control
• Assist researchers by analyzing and identifying spectra, observing targets, recording observations, and archiving data
• Perform related administrative tasks, including evaluating optics and hardware for defects and completing paperwork
• Communicate with team members, supervisors, and administrative staff

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or related field
• 4+ years’ professional experience in astronomy (preferably at the postdoctoral level)
• Experience in observing, data reduction, and modeling, including astronomical instrumentation, computer simulations
