The chief surgeon is the highest ranking medical officer of a Navy hospital ship.
The chief surgeon also assists the chief medical officer in overseeing medical staff and is the head of the medical department on the hospital ship.

Chief Surgeon Duties:
- Execute surgical techniques and procedures
- Provide consistent, high-quality patient care
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the surgical department
- Work with a team of doctors and medical staff to devise and implement new approaches to patient care

Chief Surgeon Responsibilities:

- Maintain the purchasing department to ensure an adequate supply of surgical equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for patient care, including patient care protocols, and insure compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Oversee operations, ensuring delivery of quality patient care
- Meet regularly with department heads and human resource representative to develop goals, objectives, and annual operating plan
- Conduct job performance reviews to assure appropriate compensation for staff
- Provide oversight of operating rooms, and make certain they comply with fire, electrical, safety, and sanitation regulations
- Develop and oversee policies and procedures for facility and infection control, including acquiring and maintaining necessary certifications
- Meet regularly with department heads and human resource representative to develop goals and objectives

- 5+ years of experience as a surgeon
