Child Protective Investigator Job Description

A Child Protective Investigator (CPI) is a law enforcement officer employed by the State of Texas and under the jurisdiction of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), whose duties involve investigating allegations that a child’s welfare may be endangered or in potential jeopardy through abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

The Child Protective Investigator’s investigative responsibilities include interviewing children, parents, and other relevant witnesses, as well as conducting home visits, computer searches, and surveillance.

CPIs may also participate in drafting reports, preparing investigative records, and testifying in court.

Child Protective Investigator Duties:

• Direct investigations of abuse/neglect of children and/or abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults
• Conduct and complete investigations of allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children and/or elderly and vulnerable adults and recommend appropriate action
• Assist victims in resolving situations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation
• Perform interviews and advise victims of their rights and options
• Prepare reports for courts/law enforcement agencies
• Coordinate with other agencies on investigations and protective measures
• Provide training and consultation to law enforcement, others

Child Protective Investigator Responsibilities:

• Perform case reviews, investigations, and interviews, and compile findings into reports
• Maintain accurate case records
• Attend court proceedings
• Tolerate unacceptable behavior from adult and child witnesses
• Attend trainings and participate in monthly meetings

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree or 3+ years of related experience
• 2+ years of supervisory experience in law enforcement
• Knowledge of state and federal laws governing child protective services; ability to research statutes and regulations
• Highly developed investigative skills, including interviewing and documenting
