A Child Protective Investigator (CPI) is a law enforcement officer employed by the State of Texas and under the jurisdiction of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), whose duties involve investigating allegations that a child’s welfare may be endangered or in potential jeopardy through abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
The Child Protective Investigator’s investigative responsibilities include interviewing children, parents, and other relevant witnesses, as well as conducting home visits, computer searches, and surveillance.
CPIs may also participate in drafting reports, preparing investigative records, and testifying in court.

- Assist victims in resolving situations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation
- Perform interviews and advise victims of their rights and options
- Prepare reports for courts/law enforcement agencies

- Provide training and consultation to law enforcement, others

- Bachelor’s degree or 3+ years of related experience
- 2+ years of supervisory experience in law enforcement
- Knowledge of state and federal laws governing child protective services; ability to research statutes and regulations
- Highly developed investigative skills, including interviewing and documenting
