A cinematographer is a person who makes films and videos.

Often referred to as a director of photography (dp), a cinematographer controls all technical aspects of a film or video production.

The cinematographer works closely with the director, the other members of the cast and crew, and often with the editor, to ensure the image captured in the final film or video matches the artistic vision of the director.

At a basic level, a cinematographer is the person who shoots the video or film.

The basic role of a cinematographer is to capture the image on film or video, and to supply those images to the editor along with notes about the look and lighting of the scene.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Cinematographer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in shooting and editing videos, as well as a strong understanding of the filmmaking process. If you are a creative and passionate individual with a love for filmmaking, then we want to hear from you!

Cinematographer Duties:

  • Work with the Director, Creative Team, and Production Manager to produce the highest quality work for each project
  • Perform all camera duties, including lighting, focusing, and shooting
  • Set up and operate cameras
  • Establish and maintain proper camera settings
  • Create documentary-style videos
  • Manage and oversee video equipment

Cinematographer Responsibilities:

  • Oversee film shoots, including pre-production, production, and postproduction
  • Create and adhere to production schedules, locations, and budgets
  • Plan, direct, stage, and film shoots using all film types (digital, film, and 35 mm)
  • Direct camera operators and lighting crews, and assign appropriate shots and camera positions
  • Record video or still images during production, and edit video footage to create final film product
  • Analyze and process footage to create a final video product and master print
  • Place film orders, enter film orders into computer system, and log film orders
  • Maintain inventory of film, tapes, and batteries
  • Upload final project to digital editing software and postproduction software
  • Capture and archive footage to create production files for future projects

Requirements And Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in cinematography or a related field
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a cinematography role
  • Excellent camera skills, and knowledge of lighting, lens, exposure, and film stock types
  • Excellent knowledge of digital editing and compression technologies, video codecs and file formats
