Ecologist Job Description

An ecologist is a scientist who specializes in the study of ecology.

The term is derived from the Greek ‘oikos’ meaning ‘the house’ and ‘logos’ meaning ‘study’ or ‘word’.

An ecologist studies the interactions between organisms and their habitats, and how these interactions affect the ecological balance.

An ecologist may study the effects of organisms on each other (e.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for an Ecologist to help us study the local wildlife and their habitat. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the outdoors and experience in conducting research.

Ecologist Duties:

• Research and develop biological, ecological, and ecosystem-related data and models
• Assist in field studies
• Compile, analyze and interpret data
• Create reports, manuals, and publications
• Appraise ecological systems using sound science
• Develop and implement environmental programs
• Allocate and secure funding and grant opportunities for biological, ecological, and ecosystem-related studies
• Establish and maintain research collaborations with other institutions
• Develop and oversee biological, ecological, and ecosystem data systems
• Organize special investigations
• Conduct special or field research
• Perform practical work in wild or domestic animals and birds
• Establish and maintain collections, including specimens, records, and literature
• Develop and test new and novel methods
• Perform other duties as assigned

Ecologist Responsibilities:

• Identify, select, and justify areas for further study and resource exploration
• Analyze and interpret biological, geological, environmental, oceanographic, and meteorological data, and help identify new areas for study
• Develop new and updated environmental programs, policies, standards, and regulations
• Prepare and conduct field research, including collecting samples, measuring and plotting data, and taking and interpreting measurements
• Prepare and update environmental reports, and compile required environmental data
• Prepare technical reports, correspondence, papers, memos, and outreach materials
• Perform site assessments, and attend meetings, hearings, and conferences
• Contribute to field investigations, field studies, assessments, and audits
• Prepare reports, surveys, and evaluations
• Attend meetings, conferences, and site visits

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in ecology, forestry, or a related field
• 2+ years’ field experience, including plant identification
• Knowledge of environmental laws
• Knowledge of biological control methods
• Knowledge of field work and time management skills
