Family Lawyer Job Description

A family lawyer is a legal professional who specializes in matters related to family law, such as adoption, divorce, child custody, child support, alimony, and property division.

Family lawyers handle cases that involve making legal decisions about family relationships.

For example, a family law attorney will help a client who is seeking child custody, or a child support lawyer, who will help a client who is seeking child support.

Family Lawyer Duties:

• Develop and implement strategies for successful client interactions and outcomes
• Provide legal analysis and advice to clients on a range of issues
• Assist clients through the legal process, including advising on case strategy and filing documents
• Assist clients during court hearings and in negotiations
• Promote the best interests and welfare of children
• Assist clients in finding workable solutions to family problems
• Set up and monitor budgets
• Work with outside agencies, public officials, and others regarding client issues
• Perform administrative duties, such as answering phones and greeting clients

Family Lawyer Responsibilities:

• Represent families in divorce, child custody, and child support cases
• Initiate action to respond to and resolve procedural and substantive issues pertaining to family law
• Assist clients with preparing legal pleadings and motions, and represent clients at hearings and informal meetings
• Represent clients at mediation, arbitration, and settlement conferences
• Prepare and submit legal pleadings and motions in accordance with local, state, and federal procedural rules
• Advise, counsel, and represent clients through mediation, arbitration, and settlement conferences
• Establish effective working relationships with clients, court officials, attorneys, and other parties
• Train and mentor less experienced attorneys
• Attend continuing legal education and professional seminars to stay up-to-date on developments in family law
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in law
• 3+ years of experience in family law practice or related legal field
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
• Ability to represent clients in court
• Ability to manage clients and prioritize workload
• Ability to manage and supervise support staff
