Fitter Job Description

A fitter is a person who, in construction and building work, makes, fits, fits out, or fits together.

A fitter makes or assembles parts or instruments for special purposes, as, for example, for astronomical, meteorological, or magnetic work.

The fitter’s trade, or fitters’ trade, comprises several distinct branches, each of which is a separate profession, although, in some cases, the branches are so closely connected that the distinction is not always clear.

Fitter Duties:

• Assist in planning, developing, and implementing building maintenance plans
• Develop and oversee projects related to building maintenance, such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC
• Maintain and repair building systems
• Maintain building safety and security systems
• Perform preventive maintenance to ensure building systems and equipment function optimally
• Perform repairs as needed
• Research new products and methods related to building maintenance
• Develop and implement building maintenance plans
• Develop and implement building maintenance procedures, policies, and standards

Fitter Responsibilities:

• Install and service motors, pumps, compressors, and heat exchangers; repair and replace bearings, seals, and belts; inspect, adjust, and test HVAC systems
• Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on refrigeration systems
• Document work processes and results, using computer-aided drafting equipment
• Use power tools, hand tools, welding equipment, hydraulic tools, and other equipment
• Assume responsibility for shift change

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• 3+ years building maintenance experience
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to work in environment with extreme temperatures
• Knowledge of mechanical construction techniques
• Experience in industrial equipment repair
• Ability to read blueprints and schematics
