Guidance Counselor Job Description

A guidance counselor is a high school or college student who is often trained in the field of education and who serves as a mentor to students.

Guidance counselors help advise students on academic performance, college and career choices, as well as assist in crisis management and positive lifestyle choices.

Guidance counselors often work with students in small groups.

They may also serve as advisers to clubs or sports teams, and provide counseling on educational, personal, or social matters.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a qualified Guidance Counselor to provide support and advice to students as they make important decisions about their educational and professional future. The Guidance Counselor will also collaborate with school staff and families to ensure that each student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Guidance Counselor Duties:

• Investigate, identify, and plan counseling intervention services
• Communicate with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to understand students’ needs, academic progress, and social development
• Provide individual, group, and classroom guidance counseling
• Provide feedback to parents and teachers on student progress and development
• Provide guidance counseling and resources to assist students in overcoming barriers to learning
• Identify and intervene with at-risk students
• Maintain records on all counseling services
• Other duties may be assigned

Guidance Counselor Responsibilities:

• Plan and administer student activities; lead extracurricular activities, such as sports teams or clubs; teach students study and organizational skills
• Attend school meetings and events, including faculty meetings and parent-teacher conferences
• Work with school administrators in educating students on school policies and expectations
• Provide one-on-one tutoring and group study sessions for students struggling with academics
• Encourage students to be respectful toward teachers, administrators, staff, and peers-Implement curriculum and teaching methods, using classroom assessments to evaluate students’ progress
• Develop curriculum and instruction materials
• Develop and implement plans to improve student performance

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree
• 21+ years of education and counseling experience
• Strong computer and Microsoft Office skills
• Knowledge of social, personal, and academic issues
• Proven experience motivating high school students
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Excellent communication and mentoring skills
