Infant Teacher Job Description

An infant teacher is a teacher of young children, typically ages 3 years and younger.

An infant teacher may care for children from babies to toddlers, but an infant teacher’s primary role is to work with infants and toddlers in major ways.

Infants and toddlers’ developmental needs are extremely specific, and the infant teacher is responsible for meeting these needs.

While many infant teachers have backgrounds in early childhood education or child development, this is by no means a requirement.

Infant Teacher Duties:

• Provide infant care during specified shifts
• Maintain daily logs of infants’ activities
• Monitor infants’ mental and physical development
• Provide age-appropriate activities and stimulation
• Recommend age appropriate developmental milestones
• Coordinate with other staff on treatment plans, feeding schedules, and diaper changes
• Identify developmental delays, and meet infants’ needs accordingly
• Provide families with support during changes and transitions
• Keep infants’ room clean and hygienic
• Maintain positive parent/infant relationships
• Familiarize with infant development guidelines, as well as state and local licensing regulations

Infant Teacher Responsibilities:

• Maintain and develop classroom environment for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers
• Maintain a safe and enriching environment
• Ensure class schedule, lesson plans, and snacks are planned in advance
• Evaluate performance, plan remedial activities as needed, and provide feedback to teachers and parents
• Communicate effectively with parents, children, and teachers
• Plan and implement educational activities
• Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation
• Make reports to management, including progress toward annual goals
• Maintain a clean classroom
• Develop, implement, and evaluate the curriculum
• Provide guidance, encouragement, and feedback to toddler teachers
• Create and implement lesson plans
• Manage and delegate daily administrative tasks
• Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation
• Attend staff meetings and parent conferences

Requirements And Skills:

• Two-year college degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field
• Two years’ proven experience teaching infants and/or toddlers
• Knowledge of child development, education theories and curriculum planning
• Demonstrated knowledge of classroom management best practices
• Ability to multitask, prioritize and handle
