Journeyman Carpenter Job Description

A journeyman carpenter has completed the minimum training requirements set by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a census and classification system.

A journeyman carpenter is generally considered one who has completed 2,000 hours of Carpenter’s Apprenticeship Training.

A journeyman carpenter is categorized as an “unskilled worker” under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

To become a journeyman carpenter, candidates must complete 2,000 hours or more of on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom instruction.

The ideal candidate will have experience in all aspects of carpentry, including framing, trim work, and cabinetry. Journeyman Carpenter Duties:

• Build and repair houses and buildings, using a variety of construction materials such as wood, metal, or cement
• Measure and lay out materials to be used, such as lumber, concrete, or roofing
• Place and fasten materials together with nails, screws, or bolts
• Cut, shape, or fit materials for use by using saws, chisels, or files
• Finish surfaces of materials, such as by sanding or polishing
• Clean and stain wood and furniture
• Apply protective coatings to wood
• Build and repair furniture
• Ensure that materials conform to specifications and codes
• Handle special and special equipment and materials
• Install and construct decks
• Rake, remove, and dispose of debris
• Decorate or protect the surface of newly finished work
• Securely fasten objects to wooden surfaces, such as by nailing

Journeyman Carpenter Responsibilities:

• Carry out carpentry assignments using appropriate safety techniques while working within deadlines and budgets
• Prevent damage to tools and equipment and work surfaces, and help prevent accidents
• Assess work conditions to identify safety hazards and make appropriate safety recommendations
• Identify appropriate products and materials; select tools and equipment based on job requirements
• Understand and follow safety policies, procedures, and standards

Requirements And Skills:

• Proven experience in a construction-related field
• Strong communication and computer skills
• Ability to work in a team environment with customers and other employees
• Ability to perform basic math
