Product Owner Job Description

A product owner is a person or group that manages the ownership of a given product.

When an organization creates or chooses a product, they appoint a product manager or product owner to lead and guide the product development, including research and development, marketing, and sales.

The product owner must present an informed business case for improvements, and must be able to explain to all stakeholders the projected benefits and costs of a proposed set of features.

Product Owner Duties:

• Create and maintain product backlog, manage development process, and track progress of each approved item..
• Maintain communication with stakeholders, development team, and product managers.
• Work with managers to manage team members and oversee their process.
• Manage project lifecycle from creation through implementation.
• Provide guidance and feedback to other team members on specific knowledge/skill areas.
• Document and describe project requirements, specifications, and desired results.
• Manage stakeholder expectations and ensure timely delivery.
• Manage the implementation of improvement initiatives.
• Develop processes and systems to streamline project delivery.

Product Owner Responsibilities:

• Analyze, synthesize, and communicate business improvement opportunities, product performance, and customer requirements,
• Focus on resolving complex, mission-critical issues,
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define scope and requirements, create user stories, and prepare product backlog,
• Lead cross-functional teams to develop, test, and ship software.
• Define acceptance criteria and interfaces, and document system specifications.
• Develop, maintain, and evolve project management processes.
• Drive development tasks through to project completion.
• Provide actionable status reports and project budget estimates.

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or related field.
• 2+ years’ proven product management experience.
• Ability to effectively communicate product vision.
• Strong project management skills.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Highly trained in conflict management and business negotiation processes.
