Production Artist Job Description

A production artist is a person who creates the artwork for a television program, film, commercial, or similar project using a computer.

Production artists collaborate with the director and other team members on aspects of the project such as script writing, storyboarding, and lighting.

Production artists typically work under the supervision of a supervising art director.

They work closely with other artists, writers, editors, and actors under the art director’s supervision.

During pre-production, production artists assemble preliminary artwork such as storyboards and storyboard guidelines.

They create rough illustrations or layouts to help communicate their ideas to the director and writers.

Production Artist Duties:

• Manage the planning, design, and implementation of all visual concepts, including storyboards, sketches, models, and layouts
• Maintain current knowledge of current production techniques
• Manage the delegation of tasks to subordinates based on ability and schedule
• Direct and manage all tasks related to the overall production of graphic elements
• Organize, prioritize, and schedule all work assignments
• Ensure synchronization of project timelines
• Track and report project progress to team and clients
• Anticipate and manage project issues
• Ensures proper use of budgets
• Deliver complete solutions to clients
• Monitor budgets throughout the project
• Collaborate on proposals and presentations
• Maintain current knowledge of current production techniques
• Direct and manage all tasks related to the overall production of graphic elements
• Organize, prioritize, and schedule all work assignments

Production Artist Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with developers, storyboard artists, writers, and other specialists to create visual concepts using industry-standard software
• Translate creative concepts into storyboards
• Convert storyboards into detailed production art using illustration, modeling, and animation software
• Work with vendors and manage costs for outsourced work
• Identify and resolve production problems
• Work with quality assurance teams to test animation, graphics, and effects
• Perform other related duties as required

Requirements And Skills:

• Strong knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
• Strong graphic design skills
