Public Health Nurse Duties:

• Prepare and provide medical diagnoses and treatments
• Schedule appointments and examinations
• Conduct and transcribe medical examinations
• Gather information related to patient problems
• Advise patients of changes in illness, treatment, or self-care
• Assess patients to identify possible problems
• Monitor patient progress, and advise physicians of changes in health status

• Plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans, and develop goals for those plans
• Promote the physical and emotional well-being of patients
• Assist patients with adherence and addressing barriers to treatment
• Prescribe medications, treatments, and therapies
• Coordinate patient care with physicians and other healthcare providers
• Lead, coordinate, and supervise the work of healthcare team members
• Communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding evaluation, treatment, and care plans

Public Health Nurse Responsibilities:

• Investigate, assess, and provide care to address specific health needs of patients
• Provide health care education to patients, families, and caregivers
• Investigate, evaluate, and develop treatment plans for acute and chronic illness
• Lead and manage a team of registered nurses including scheduling, hiring, and training
• Coordinate with hospitals and healthcare providers to optimize patient care
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with coworkers
• Conduct various administrative tasks including reviewing medical records and entering data
• Manage inventory and finances by validating receipts and expense reports; verifying invoices against purchase orders and material orders; and reviewing cost reports
• Develop and maintain a professional knowledge of current issues, regulations, and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing
• 3+ years experience in public health nursing (certificate in public health nursing preferred)
• Knowledge of public health nursing concepts and practices; knowledge of and ability to apply health laws and guidelines
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with a constant eye on quality
