Rehabilitation Counselor Job Description

A rehabilitation counselor is someone who helps inmates transition into society after leaving prison.

Rehabilitation counselors are professionals who work with inmates on issues such as substance abuse, anger management, and communication skills.

Counselors also work with inmates with special needs such as mental disabilities or physical disabilities.

Most rehabilitation counselors work with other social workers, nurses, and psychologists.

Rehabilitation Counselor Duties:

• Assess client’s needs, develop individualized plan for providing rehabilitation services
• Develop effective teaching strategies
• Assist clients with independent living skills, safety, and personal hygiene
• Prepare reports, charts, and graphs to document client progress
• Create individualized plans for clients
• Maintain accurate client records

Rehabilitation Counselor Responsibilities:

• Provide one-on-one counseling to residents to assess their needs, determine program eligibility, and plan individual service plans
• Explain program benefits, procedures, and available resources to residents and family members
• Set up and maintain regular contact with referred residents and their families
• Demonstrate effective listening skills, patience, and empathy
• Prepare and submit reports related to counseling activities to track client outcomes and performance
• Maintain case files and records

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent
• 3+ years’ experience providing rehabilitation services to clients
• Experience providing counseling and case management to clients
• Knowledge of rehabilitation and insurance industry operations
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to accurately document unit/program information
• Ability to manage client
