Special Education Teacher Job Description

Special education teachers coordinate, plan, assess, and instruct students with special needs in a classroom setting.

They teach students with cognitive, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities.

These special needs include learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and emotional disorders.

Special education teachers develop and implement teaching plans to meet the unique needs of their students.

They conduct research in the areas of special education and incorporate their findings into their teaching practices.

Special education teachers also develop relationships with parents to discuss their child’s educational progress.

Special education teachers participate in professional development activities throughout the year to stay abreast of current innovations in teaching methods and curriculum.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Special Education Teacher to work with our students who have learning disabilities. The ideal candidate will be able to develop personalized education plans and adapt lesson plans to fit the needs of each student. They will also be responsible for communicating with parents and guardians to keep them updated on their child’s progress.

Special Education Teacher Duties:

• Assists in the education of students with special needs
• Promotes positive relationships between students, staff, parents and the community
• Builds positive relationships within the school
• Improves students’ self-esteem and behavior
• Maintains school records in accordance with school policy and state regulations
• Works closely with families to address any educational or behavioral needs
• Facilitates observations, assessments, and evaluations
• Communicates and documents student progress to parents and school personnel
• Assists with planning and implementation of IEPs for students with disabilities
• Provides special education instruction to students for the classroom
• Develops lesson plans and develops individualized education plans
• Maintains special education student records
• Performs other duties as assigned

Special Education Teacher Responsibilities:

• Supervise children with a variety of special needs, including physical, developmental, emotional, social, and mental health, and collaborate with parents, therapists, and staff
• Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities, such as crafts, cooking, music, and games; prepare and implement individualized treatment plans
• Develop and implement IEPs (Individual Education Plans)
• Motivate and supervise students during physical education and other classroom activities, including games, sports, and field days
• Advise students and their parents about behavioral and health issues, developmental and school-based assessments, and school policies and procedures
• Work closely with therapists and other professionals regarding any students with special needs
• Collaborate with paraprofessionals, teachers, and school administrators
• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field and license or certificate to teach in CT

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Preferred certification in special education
• At least 5 years’ classroom experience
• Ability to work with diverse student groups
• Ability to work with colleagues, parents and staff
• Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing special education
