SQL Server DBA Job Description

A SQL Server DBA (Database Administrator) is a database administrator who is responsible for the maintenance, administration, and performance of a database, including SQL Server.

The DBA is a key player in maximizing database performance.

We’re looking for an experienced SQL Server DBA to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience administering and troubleshooting SQL Server databases in a production environment.

SQL Server DBA Duties:

• Ensure smooth and efficient operation of a database system
• Generally, responsibility for upkeep, support, maintenance, and upgrading of database
• Proactively manage databases and database systems to ensure maximum availability with minimal downtime
• Monitor and supervise all databases to ensure they are performing efficiently and within the established parameters
• Establish and maintain system backups, daily and weekly
• Keep abreast of new developments in database management systems and applications
• Create, modify, and maintain software design and development specifications
• Help in the design of database structures, data models, and database administration
• Assist in the training of technical personnel about the database
• Proactively monitor and troubleshoot databases to identify weaknesses and inefficiencies
• Provide assistance and support for operations personnel, as needed

SQL Server DBA Responsibilities:

• Maintain and optimize SQL Server databases by implementing and enforcing security policies, and creating and managing database designs, indexes, and stored procedures
• Conduct regular database and index reviews and recommend changes to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the databases
• Provide technical support to end users and transitioning teams by troubleshooting database issues, providing advice and assistance, and resolving problems
• Implement backup and recovery plans, and monitor backups and test recovery plans
• Provide performance tuning and optimization of SQL Server databases
• Provide assistance with all SQL Server database administration
• Provide recommendations to management on database technology adoption, including systems management, licensing, security, and performance
• Provide recommendations for vendor selection and contract negotiation
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, or related field
• 5+ years of experience supporting SQL Server
• Knowledge of SQL Server design, maintenance, and troubleshooting
• Knowledge of database design concepts
• Knowledge of T-SQL, stored procedures, and functions
