Taxidermist Job Description

A taxidermist is a scientist who prepares and preserves dead animals or birds.

A taxidermist prepares animals by removing the skin and surrounding flesh and then placing that flesh in a formalin solution.

The removed skin is then preserved with a preservative, such as formalin.

After embalming, the taxidermist then skins the animal.

The skin is then preserved and mounted.

The taxidermist is the person who prepares the animal for the mount.

The taxidermist is also responsible for selecting the mount.

The mount is the final appearance of the animal.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Taxidermist to join our team! We are a family-owned business that has been in operation for over 30 years. We are looking for someone with a passion for taxidermy and a willingness to learn. If you are a self-starter and have a positive attitude, we would love to have you on our team!

Taxidermist Duties:

• Clean up animal carcasses and prepare specimens for mounting
• Use specialized sewing machines and other tools to create mounts
• Prepare the skin and fur for mounting
• Assist with curing and tanning of hides
• Perform other duties as needed

Taxidermist Responsibilities:

• Create, prepare, remove, and display mounts and mounts
• Design, develop, and mount skins of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals
• Utilize computer software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, to prepare skins for mounting
• Preparing, mounting, and preserving specimens and mounts for public display

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, game or fish management
• 1+ year’s taxidermy experience
• Knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology and biology
• Ability to work with various species of animals
• Strong knowledge of taxidermy techniques
