In marine engineering, the term trainee engineer (TE) denotes an engineer in the far eastern hemisphere, typically from East Asia, who has completed his or her sea time but is not yet qualified as a Chief Engineer.

The TE can usually perform all the duties of a Chief Engineer, but must work under the supervision of the qualified Chief Engineer.

A trainee engineer must be supervised by a Chief Engineer designated by his or her country’s flag state.

A trainee engineer must have completed 2 years sea time and an additional 4 years in watch-keeping and engineer training.

Trainee Engineer Duties:

  • Under the direct supervision of a Senior Engineer, performs a variety of tasks including planning, design, and construction of industrial systems
  • Assist the Senior Engineer in performing general engineering duties, such as preparing estimates, project schedules, cost breakdowns, preliminary reports, and other technical documents
  • Undertakes a variety of engineering and supervisory work, including technical research, numerical computations, and preparation of reports
  • Interacts with engineers, architects, clients, and the general public
  • Performs related work as required

Trainee Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Assist with administrative, architectural, and systems engineering tasks
  • Perform drafting, drawing, and modeling using AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit
  • Understand and apply industry standards, codes, and procedures
  • Develop cost estimates and time estimates for projects
  • Conduct research and provide solutions to practical engineering problems
  • Run field and laboratory tests, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural tests
  • Complete and submit professional reports, including budget and time estimates, specifications, and project reports
  • Communicate with subcontractors and vendors to relay project information effectively
  • Make site visits to observe construction progress
  • Participate in on-the-job training programs
  • Perform other assignments as required

Requirements And Skills:

  • College degree in civil, structural, mechanical, , or electrical engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience (including internships) in one or more of the above specialties
  • Knowledge of construction methods and technologies, and ability to interpret technical drawings and contracts
  • Knowledge of building code requirements
