Truck Driver Job Description

A truck driver is a self-employed person who owns the truck, and who hires a truck driver.

A truck driver must perform both loading and unloading of the truck.

Since truck drivers operate their own vehicles, drivers must purchase or cultivate their own freight.

A truck driver’s gross receipts, or the amount of money earned from his or her business, are the driver’s personal income, rather than that of the trucking company.

Truck drivers operate independently, but may hire other truck drivers, called co-drivers, to drive with them.

A truck driver may choose to operate as a sole proprietor, a corporation, a partnership, or as an LLC.

Job Brief:

Truck Driver Duties:

• Transport materials, equipment, tools, and supplies to and from job sites.
• Keep trucks in a clean, well-maintained condition.
• Ensure on-time delivery of materials.
• Oversee proper loading of trucks.
• Keep accurate records of deliveries.
• Maintain all paperwork necessary for filing and taxes.
• Maintain accurate records on file of all drivers, deliveries, equipment, and material usage.

Truck Driver Responsibilities:

• Drive and tow semi-tractor trailers.
• Procure and load product on company owned trucks.
• Monitor and maintain truck fueling systems.
• Maintain current DOT, CDL, and HazMat certifications.
• Assist with loading and unloading materials at job sites.
• Ensure a high level of customer service.
• Work cooperatively with other company departments.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Project Manager.

Requirements And Skills:

• Experience driving tractor trailer trucks and Class C commercial drivers’ license required.
• Ability to conduct pre-trip inspections of trucks, maintain logs and keep vehicles properly maintained.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers and management.
• Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
