Zoologist Job Description

A zoologist, also known as a zoologist scientist, is a scientist who specializes in the study of animals.

While zoologists generally are scientists, some zoologists work as zoo curators who care for animals at zoos and aquariums.

Zoologist Duties:

• Maintain accurate records and databases of all animals owned by the organization
• Investigate and treat injured, sick, and/or abandoned animals
• Record all animal health histories
• Maintain effective working relationships with veterinarians
• Assist with a variety of other general administrative duties
• Investigate animal damage and animal related accidents
• Prevent and control disease, parasites, and injuries as related to animals
• Prepare animal inventory
• Identify and mitigate potential threats to animals
• Collect, maintain, and organize biological samples
• Promote healthy biodiversity
• Provide care for adopted or orphaned animals
• Assist with educational programs
• Provide leadership within the department
• Carry out other related duties as assigned

Zoologist Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and maintain detailed rodent control plans and documents, working with pest control professionals, staff, and stakeholders
• Manage the rat control budget, including submission of rodent control bids, budget projections, and billing
• Monitor rodent control operations daily, including rat trapping, rodent monitoring, rodent proofing, and rodent proofing
• Develop, implement, and maintain rodent control standard operating procedures, including rodent damage assessments, rodent control standards, and rodent control safety procedures
• Keep abreast of current best practices for rodent control
• Maintain rodent control records and prepare reports
• Development of rodent control and rodent control management training materials
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field
• 2+ years experience in an aquatic animal care or rehabilitation facility
• Excellent decision-making skills
• Excellent customer service and communication skills
• Knowledge of animal behavior and anatomy; able to respond to emergencies
• Ability to travel up to 35% of the time
