Chief Innovation Officer Job Description

The chief innovation officer, more commonly referred to as a chief technology or innovation officer, is in charge of innovation.

They oversee R&D (research and development) departments and are responsible for ensuring that innovation is done efficiently and in accordance with the company’s mission and vision.

They also are responsible for creating a culture of innovation that is in place across an entire organization.

The CIO reports to the CEO, COO, CFO, or other top-level executive.

The CIO’s ability to lead innovation in an organization is directly related to their ability to lead innovation processes.

The processes they oversee include strategic planning, operational processes, and aspects of human resources.

Chief Innovation Officer Duties:

• Drive, set, and scale company’s innovation initiatives
• Develop and oversee an internal innovation ecosystem that promotes smart ideas, fosters co-creation, and leverages collective wisdom
• Lead, manage, and oversee innovation scouting and scouting teams
• Liaise with global innovation community, universities, and other external resources
• Collaborate with business leaders and teams to identify opportunities and develop solutions
• Oversee and facilitate regular innovation sessions, workshops, and retreats
• Develop strategic relationships to foster industry innovation
• Manage and oversee quality control for external innovation initiatives
• Promote innovation culture by sharing best practices and identifying opportunities
• Identify, develop, and oversee special projects
• Support innovation-focused training, coaching, and mentoring
• Oversee and monitor innovation metrics and progress towards company’s innovation goals

Chief Innovation Officer Responsibilities:

• Identify and leverage technology innovations to improve organization performance
• Maintain current knowledge of market trends and technologies, and advise management on effectively using emerging technology to achieve business objectives
• Create technology roadmaps, including execution plans, timelines, and budgets
• Develop and manage processes, tools, and data gathering techniques to monitor and evaluate the impact of technology on organization performance
• Develop policies, standards, and guidelines related to technology, and oversee their implementation
• Identify and document processes, procedures, and policies that should be automated and automate them
• Develop and implement measures to evaluate the effectiveness of automation and new technology efforts
• Explore new business opportunities with technology
• Learn more about the company’s plans, products, and services
• Maintain current awareness of new technologies
• Perform other job-related duties as required

Requirements And Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering
• 2+ years experience as innovation manager or researcher
• Knowledge of lean startup methodology
• Experience in moving technology projects from conception to commercialization
• Knowledge of product development process
• Experience managing cross-functional teams
• Strong leadership
