Gastroenterologist Duties:

• Review patient histories, perform physical exams, and make diagnoses regarding patient’s gastrointestinal (digestive and gastrointestinal tracts) problems
• Create treatment plans for patient’s gastrointestinal problems
• Explain treatment recommendations to patients
• Interpret results of diagnostic tests
• Treatment may include prescribing medications, counseling patients on diet changes, or performing surgery
• Monitor patients’ progress
• Doctors specialize in one of two main areas: gastroenterology or hepatology (liver)

Gastroenterologist Responsibilities:

• Schedule and carry out endoscopic procedures using state-of-the-art endoscopes and equipment
• Perform and interpret diagnostic tests and biopsies
• Perform and interpret laboratory tests
• Develop and maintain medical histories, treatment plans, and patient education materials
• Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and physicians

Requirements And Skills:

• Doctorate in gastroenterology
• 2+ years’ previous gastroenterology experience
• Knowledge of gastroenterology procedures and care
• Ability to effectively present information to patients and staff
• Excellent communication skills with patient/family
• Strong problem-solving skills
