Geriatric Physician Job Description

A geriatrician is a physician who specializes in the health care of older adults.

Their training begins in medical school, but the majority of their training is done within four years of graduation.

Geriatricians complete a specialty fellowship in geriatrics, which focuses on the medical conditions and diseases that occur with increasing frequency among older adults.

They learn to diagnose and treat the medical conditions of older adults.

Job Brief:

We’re looking for a Geriatric Physician to provide care for our patients who are 65 years of age and older. The Geriatric Physician will be responsible for managing the care of our patients, as well as working with our team of nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals.

Geriatric Physician Duties:

• Perform physical exams, diagnosis, and initiate treatment
• Maintain patient records and histories
• Consult with other specialists as needed
• Investigate, diagnose, and treat disorders and diseases affecting the elderly
• Formulate treatment plans and diagnoses
• Provide health education to patients, families, and staff
• Recommend changes in health habits for disease prevention
• Advise on primary health needs, therapies, and medications
• Instruct patients and their families in appropriate medical techniques
• Clarify and coordinate care with other health care providers

Geriatric Physician Responsibilities:

• Provide medical care to patients of all ages, with an emphasis on the elderly
• Complete medical histories and physical examinations
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, from minor procedures to complex surgery
• Write medical prescriptions, including medications, therapeutic diets, and therapeutic exercises
• Evaluate and treat respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and blood diseases
• Provide therapeutic and rehabilitative services, including patient and family education, pain management, and nutritional counseling
• Provide patient and family advocacy services, such as counseling, case management, and psychological services
• Assist with documentation and billing

Requirements And Skills:

• Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
• 2+ years’ hospital experience, preferably in a geriatric setting
• Proven ability to communicate with patients, families, and other healthcare team members
• Ability to make sound clinical decisions based on patient and family health history
