Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Job Description

A Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is a nurse who has completed an approved training program and is licensed to practice nursing and is certified in CPR and lifesaving.

LVNs perform routine nursing tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, helping patients with activities of daily living, monitoring patients, recording patient history, feeding patients, and administering medications.

Some LVNs work as direct care nurses or clinical nurse specialists, providing care for patients.

Some LVNs operate as a case manager, providing care coordination for patients and their families.

Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Duties:

• Maintain a professional attitude and appearance, and exhibit leadership qualities
• Perform the nursing duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse
• Conduct initial evaluations and observe and evaluate progression of care
• Comply with established policies, procedures, and codes of practice
• Ensure that all equipment is properly cleaned and sterilized
• Capable of handling multiple tasks, in a timely manner and under pressure
• Completes assignments in a timely manner, following prescribed policies and procedures
• Maintains open and frequent communication with supervisor regarding all patients under his or her care
• Responds to emergency situations
• Provides professional nursing care to assigned patients
• Performs the duties assigned to him or her in accordance with established policies and procedures
• Performs the nursing duties associated with the department and within the scope of his or her licensure

Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Responsibilities:

• Current Licensed Vocational Nurse License
• 2+ years of experience in a long-term care, skilled nursing facility
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
• Ability to work independently and as a team
