Oral Surgeon Job Description

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) is a specialty physician who provides surgical care for diseases, injuries, and defects of the mouth, jaws, teeth, and facial regions.

A dental specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery is trained in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders, diseases, and injuries of the mouth, jaws, teeth, and facial regions.

OMS often work with a multi-disciplinary team including dental and other medical specialists to deliver comprehensive care.

Oral Surgeon Duties:

• Perform surgery in the oral and maxillofacial region and provide treatments such as tooth extractions, bone grafting, and dental implants
• Provide patients with preoperative diagnoses and postoperative instructions
• Monitor patient progress, progress of treatment, and response to treatment
• Provide referrals to specialists or medical doctors as appropriate
• Screen patients for oral pathology and refer patients to specialists when necessary
• Serve as consultant to general practitioners
• Undergo continual training to stay abreast of technological advancements in dental medicine

Oral Surgeon Responsibilities:

• Graduate of an accredited dental school
• United States Dental Board certification
• 5+ years’ experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, including direct patient care
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively
• Ability to work extended hours

Requirements And Skills:

• Perform extractions, orthognathic surgeries, and other tooth extraction procedures
• Perform patient consultations and discuss treatment plans, including merits and risks, fees, and payment policies
• Perform minor surgical procedures, including biopsies, biopsies, and cysts
