Pediatric Medical Assistant Job Description

A pediatric medical assistant is an individual who provides care to patients under the supervision of a physician or surgeon.

In order to perform this role, a pediatric medical assistant is required to have a high school diploma, a certification in medical assisting, and a state license.

Pediatric medical assistants work with their patients on a one-to-one basis, coordinating and assisting with the care of patients.

They document patient information, take patient vital signs, and prepare patients for medical examinations and procedures.

They assist in laboratory testing and in the administration of medications.

Pediatric Medical Assistant Duties:

• Provide high-quality, compassionate medical services to children and their families
• Receive, record, and report patient and family information
• Perform various exams, including vital signs, temperature checks, and weight
• Perform invasive procedures such as injections and venipuncture
• Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs)
• Assist physicians and nurses with procedures
• Perform initial patient evaluations, including review of medical history
• Perform diagnostic testing, including blood tests
• Coordinate with other healthcare professionals to provide continuity of care
• Assist in diagnostic and surgical procedures
• Monitor patients during and after examinations
• Obtain specimens and vital signs
• Dispose of used needles and sterilized items
• Clean and sterilize medical instruments

Requirements And Skills:

• Maintain accurate patient records, schedules appointments, and processes insurance claims
• Attend to patients’ medical needs, including administering first aid and observing vital signs, providing physicals, and treatments, and helping them perform daily personal hygiene activities
• Assist in taking medical histories and histories
• Prepare and maintain medical equipment, including drawing blood
• Record patient information such as weight and height
• Perform daily lab work (including blood draws)
• Perform unit/clinical rounds
• Assist in preparation of meals for patients and family members
