Sanitation Worker Job Description

A sanitation worker is a person who works in the sanitation profession and performs tasks such as the disposal of waste material, waste storage area maintenance, and waste management.

Sanitation workers can be full-time employees or self-employed contractors, although full-time sanitation workers are more commonly found.

Sanitation workers also may be involved in the cleaning of wastewater, recycling, and sewage treatment.

Sanitation workers use many types of equipment, including vacuum trucks, street sweepers, bucket loaders, and road sweepers.

Sanitation Worker Duties:

• Perform routine upkeep of hospital facilities, including cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining the cleanliness of spaces
• Help maintain debris-free, clean, and orderly clinical/surgical areas
• Assure that trash, waste, and debris are disposed of properly
• Perform other duties as assigned

Sanitation Worker Responsibilities:

• Work safely, wear required protective equipment, and conform to safety procedures
• Drive and maintain sanitation vehicles
• Perform routine checks on equipment to locate and report malfunctions
• Operate heavy, large, or special equipment
• Maintain accurate records of vehicle and equipment inventory
• Report vehicle and equipment usage and maintenance issues to supervisors
• Perform routine checks on building equipment to locate and report malfunctions
• Perform other job duties and tasks as assigned

Requirements And Skills:

• High school diploma or GED
• Knowledge of hazardous waste and environmental regulations
• Knowledge of general safety practices and procedures
• Ability to lift 50 pounds (20% of the time or more)
• Ability to be on your feet for 8-10 hours at a time
